Introduction to Depression
Depression is a common mood disorder characterized by persistent sadness, loss of interest, and a lack of motivation in life. Patients often experience fatigue, insomnia or excessive sleep, difficulty concentrating, and reduced self-esteem. In severe cases, suicidal thoughts or behaviors may occur.
The development of depression is linked to multiple factors, including genetics, neurotransmitter imbalances, life stress, and adverse psychosocial environments. It affects not only mental health but may also cause physical problems such as weakened immunity and chronic pain.
Traditional Chinese Medicine for Treating Depression
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), depression is often classified as “Yu Zheng” (stagnation syndrome). TCM believes the root cause lies in the disharmony of qi movement and emotional blockage, which leads to liver qi stagnation and affects the functions of the heart, spleen, and kidney. Treatment emphasizes “pattern differentiation and treatment,” tailoring therapy to each individual’s constitution and symptoms.
Common patterns include liver qi stagnation, deficiency of heart and spleen, and phlegm-qi stagnation. Herbal prescriptions such as Chai Hu Shu Gan San or Gui Pi Tang are used to soothe the liver, relieve stagnation, and tonify the heart and spleen. Acupuncture stimulates points such as Baihui (DU20), Shenmen (HT7), and Neiguan (PC6) to regulate qi and calm the mind. Furthermore, TCM emphasizes lifestyle adjustments, including diet, sleep, and emotional regulation, to restore balance of body and mind.
