Acupuncture Introduction
Acupuncture, one of the principal therapeutic methods in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has been practiced for over two thousand years. By inserting fine needles into specific acupoints, it regulates the flow of Qi and blood, balances Yin and Yang, and restores the functional harmony of the internal organs.
Today, acupuncture is not only widely practiced in China but has also spread globally, becoming one of the most recognized forms of traditional medicine.
In recent decades, with the advancement of modern science, acupuncture has gained increasing recognition worldwide for its therapeutic benefits and mechanisms.
Theoretical Foundation
The theoretical foundation of acupuncture originates from classical texts such as The Yellow Emperor’s Inner Classic (Huangdi Neijing) and Systematic Classic of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (Zhenjiu Jiayi Jing).
The Neijing established the meridian theory, stating, “The meridians determine life and death, treat a hundred diseases, and regulate deficiency and excess.” Meridians serve as pathways for Qi and blood, while acupoints act as regulatory nodes.
The Zhenjiu Jiayi Jing systematized the location of acupoints and needling methods, providing a clinical framework.
In TCM theory, diseases arise from disruptions of Qi flow, imbalances of Yin and Yang, or dysfunction of internal organs. By stimulating specific acupoints, acupuncture aims to unblock meridians, regulate Qi and blood, strengthen the body’s resistance, and expel pathogenic factors.
Efficacy and Modern Research
Acupuncture is widely applied for chronic pain, headaches, musculoskeletal disorders, digestive dysfunctions, insomnia, anxiety, depression, infertility, and stroke rehabilitation.
Modern research shows that acupuncture regulates the central nervous system, promotes the release of neurotransmitters and endorphins, improves circulation, and modulates immune responses, thereby producing analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and stress-relieving effects.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes acupuncture as an effective therapy for multiple conditions. In recent years, studies using neuroimaging and molecular biology have further elucidated its mechanisms, enhancing its role in global healthcare.
Moxibustion Introduction
Moxibustion, one of the major therapeutic methods of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history and is often mentioned alongside acupuncture as “acupuncture and moxibustion.” It uses dried mugwort (Artemisia argyi) as the primary material.
By burning moxa sticks or cones and applying heat to specific acupoints, moxibustion promotes meridian flow, warms Yang, dispels cold, and strengthens the body’s resistance.
Moxibustion has been widely practiced not only as a medical treatment but also as a preventive healthcare method throughout Chinese history.
Theoretical Foundation
The theoretical basis of moxibustion can be traced to The Yellow Emperor’s Inner Classic (Huangdi Neijing), which states, “Where needling cannot reach, moxibustion is suitable.” This highlights its importance in warming Yang, dispelling cold, and strengthening vital Qi.
In TCM, cold pathogens damage Yang Qi, leading to stagnation of Qi and blood and dysfunction of the organs. Mugwort, being warm in nature, penetrates meridians, replenishes Yang, and regulates Qi and blood.
Classical texts such as Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold (Beiji Qianjin Yaofang) and The Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (Zhenjiu Dacheng) provide detailed records of indications and techniques of moxibustion, forming the theoretical foundation for its clinical use.
Efficacy and Modern Research
Moxibustion is widely applied for conditions such as cold syndromes, deficiency syndromes, chronic pain, indigestion, menstrual disorders, low immunity, and general health maintenance.
Clinical evidence shows that it improves blood circulation, enhances metabolism, and regulates immune function.
Modern research indicates that the thermal stimulation of moxibustion influences the neuro-endocrine-immune network, producing anti-inflammatory effects and promoting tissue repair.
It is also effective in reducing fatigue, improving sleep, and enhancing quality of life. For these reasons, moxibustion is increasingly valued in rehabilitation medicine and wellness care.
Cupping Therapy Introduction
Cupping therapy is a traditional method in TCM with a long history and broad applications. It involves using specially designed cups to create negative pressure, either by fire or suction, allowing the cups to adhere to specific acupoints or body regions.
This generates warming and pulling effects on the skin and underlying tissues. Cupping promotes Qi and blood circulation, dispels wind and cold, and alleviates pain.
References to cupping-like practices appear in The Yellow Emperor’s Inner Classic (Huangdi Neijing), which described drawing out toxins and regulating Qi and blood.
Theoretical Foundation
The theoretical foundation of cupping is based on meridian theory and TCM pathogenesis. The Huangdi Neijing emphasized that deficiency of vital Qi and invasion of pathogenic factors cause meridian blockage and Qi stagnation, leading to illness.
Cupping creates local suction that increases blood flow, opens meridians, and relieves pain by following the principle “where there is free flow, there is no pain.” It expels wind, cold, and damp pathogens while balancing Yin and Yang and enhancing resistance.
Classical texts such as Golden Mirror of Medicine (Yizong Jinjian) and The Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (Zhenjiu Dacheng) provide detailed discussions on cupping indications and techniques.
Efficacy and Modern Research
Cupping is commonly applied for neck, shoulder, back, and leg pain, arthritis, colds, coughs, asthma, indigestion, and fatigue. Its main effects include promoting local blood circulation, enhancing tissue metabolism, reducing muscle tension, and alleviating inflammation.
Modern studies show that cupping modulates the neuro-endocrine-immune system, enhances antioxidant and anti-inflammatory functions, and benefits conditions such as chronic pain, sleep disturbances, and stress.
Recently, cupping has gained global attention through its use by athletes and is now recognized as a safe and effective method for rehabilitation and wellness.
Chinese Herbal Medicine
Chinese herbal medicine is an essential part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with a history spanning thousands of years. Herbs are primarily derived from plants (roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits), as well as certain animal and mineral sources.
They are prescribed according to syndrome differentiation and formula compatibility to restore Yin–Yang balance, regulate Qi and blood, and harmonize organ functions.
The Shennong Bencao Jing (Divine Farmer’s Classic of Materia Medica), the earliest known pharmacological text, classified herbs into superior, medium, and inferior categories, laying the foundation for Chinese materia medica.
Theoretical Foundations
The theoretical foundation of Chinese herbal medicine originates from classical texts such as the Huangdi Neijing (Yellow Emperor’s Inner Classic). It emphasizes that health is maintained when Yin and Yang are balanced, and disease arises from disharmony in Yin–Yang, Qi–blood, and organ systems.
Herbal prescriptions follow the principle of “Chief, Deputy, Assistant, and Envoy” (Jun, Chen, Zuo, Shi), ensuring holistic therapeutic effects that address both root causes and symptoms.
Influential works such as Shanghan Lun (Treatise on Cold Damage) and Jinkui Yaolue (Essential Prescriptions from the Golden Cabinet) provide systematic guidance on diagnosis, treatment, and herbal applications.
Efficacy
Chinese herbal medicine is widely applied in internal medicine, gynecology, pediatrics, and surgery for conditions such as colds, digestive disorders, insomnia, menstrual irregularities, and rheumatic pain.
It also emphasizes overall health regulation, being commonly used to strengthen immunity, delay aging, and improve sub-health conditions.
Classic formulas such as Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction, for spleen Qi tonification) and Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia, for kidney Yin nourishment) are still in extensive clinical use today.
