The Five-Tone Therapy
The Five-Tone Therapy in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) originates from the Huangdi Neijing (Yellow Emperor’s Inner Canon), which states that the five tones—Gong, Shang, Jue, Zhi, Yu—correspond to the five organs. Through resonance, these tones regulate qi and blood, balance yin and yang, and help prevent and treat diseases. Music here is not merely art but a therapeutic tool closely linked to physiology and emotions.
1. Gong (宫)
Gong corresponds to the spleen and the earth element. Its deep and steady tone strengthens the spleen and stomach, improving digestion. The Neijing records: “The spleen resonates with Gong; listening to Gong harmonizes the spleen.” It is effective for poor appetite and fatigue.
2. Shang (商)
Shang corresponds to the lungs and the metal element. Its clear and solemn tone benefits the lungs, regulates qi, and calms the respiratory system. Ancient texts say: “The lungs resonate with Shang; listening to Shang pacifies the lungs.” Useful for cough, shortness of breath, and sadness.
3. Jue (角)
Jue corresponds to the liver and the wood element. Its expansive tone soothes the liver, relieves stagnation, and regulates qi flow. As the Neijing notes: “The liver resonates with Jue; listening to Jue relaxes the liver.” Applied in cases of chest oppression, irritability, and depression.
4. Zhi (徵)
Zhi corresponds to the heart and the fire element. Its bright and uplifting tone invigorates heart yang and promotes circulation. According to the Neijing: “The heart resonates with Zhi; listening to Zhi calms the heart.” It is helpful for palpitations, insomnia, and low mood.
5. Yu (羽)
Yu corresponds to the kidneys and the water element. Its deep, lingering tone nourishes kidney qi and settles the spirit. Classical physicians said: “The kidneys resonate with Yu; listening to Yu harmonizes the kidneys.” Indicated for weakness in the lower back, tinnitus, and memory issues.
In summary, Five-Tone Therapy utilizes the resonance between sound and organ systems to “heal through music.” As the Su Wen states: “The five tones enter the five organs, each with its own therapeutic effect.” Modern studies also confirm that music regulates the nervous system and emotional states, echoing the wisdom of ancient Chinese medicine.
