Spring Equinox Wellnes

The Huangdi Neijing states: “In the three months of spring, this is called the period of renewal. Heaven and earth are both alive, and all things flourish.”

The Spring Equinox, one of the twenty-four solar terms, marks the moment when day and night are equal, and yin and yang are in balance. From this time on, yang energy gradually rises, and nature thrives. Yet, the equinox is also a key turning point in the body’s yin-yang transformation, and if not cared for properly, it can lead to illness.

Common Ailments During the Spring Equinox

At this time, yang energy rises and the liver becomes more active. If liver qi does not flow smoothly, one may experience headaches, dizziness, insomnia with vivid dreams, dry or teary eyes, and irritability.

As the saying goes, “a hundred diseases arise from wind.” The season is often windy, making people prone to colds, coughs, and allergic rhinitis. With the climate alternating between warmth and chill, joint pain and the recurrence of chronic illnesses are also common.

Modern lifestyles—long hours of sitting, late nights, and overwork—further stagnate liver qi and weaken the spleen and stomach, resulting in spring fatigue and lethargy.

Physical Care

  • Follow Natural Rhythms: Rise early with the sun to nurture yang energy, and avoid staying up late to protect liver blood.
  • Soothe the Liver: As “the liver governs free flow,” it must not be constrained. Take walks in nature, enjoy the blossoming scenery, and allow emotions to release naturally.
  • Light Diet: Favor mild foods such as spinach, chives, bamboo shoots, goji berries, and chrysanthemum tea. Limit greasy and rich foods that burden the spleen. Sour foods like hawthorn and citrus may nourish the liver, but should be taken moderately to avoid excessive liver activity suppressing the spleen.
  • Guard Against Cold: Though warmth increases, spring chills linger. Keep the back, neck, and feet warm to avoid wind-cold invasion.

Mental Wellbeing

The Suwen advises, “Serenity and emptiness allow true qi to follow; when spirit is guarded within, whence can illness arise?” During the equinox, emotions may fluctuate and the mind grows restless. In our fast-paced society, anxiety and low mood are common, making “nourishing the heart” all the more vital.

  • Calm the Mind: Practice tai chi, qigong, or meditation to regulate breath and spirit. Quiet sitting each day helps collect scattered thoughts.
  • Stay Optimistic: Spring is a season of renewal—harbor less anger and more hope. Conversation with friends, or engaging in arts, calligraphy, or gardening, helps emotions flow.
  • Reduce Anxiety: In the digital age, information overload strains the nerves. During the equinox, practice “letting go”—reduce screen time, create mental space, and allow the heart to breathe.

Integrating with Modern Lifestyle

For today’s busy individuals, ancient wisdom and modern science can complement each other:

  • Exercise: Jogging, brisk walking, or yoga weekly supports yang qi and stretches the sinews.
  • Sleep: Ensure at least seven hours of rest; spring fatigue is often resolved by proper sleep.
  • Mental Health: Music therapy and mindfulness breathing align with the Chinese medicine principle of harmonizing yin and yang.
  • Green Diet: Light, fresh, and seasonal foods resonate with the energy of spring growth.

Conclusion

The Spring Equinox is a balance point of yin and yang, and a crucial time for self-cultivation. As the ancients said: “The Spring Equinox is when yin and yang are half and half; day and night are equal, and cold and warmth are balanced.”

By following the rhythm of the seasons and nourishing both body and mind, we can ensure the free flow of liver qi, strengthen the spleen and stomach, and keep the spirit joyful.

In the fast-paced world today, the equinox reminds us to slow down, connect with nature, and breathe in harmony with the universe. The wisdom of this season lies in balance—true wellness arises from harmony within and without.

Jul 7
